Valentine’s Day and Being Single.

Single

Let’s face it, every year Valentine’s day comes around and single people are reminded that they are alone. But you singletons need not fear. Being single, in my opinion, is great!

14th February alone proves that being single is pretty awesome. Rather than give and receive rubbish valentines themed gifts and spend money you don’t have on overpriced restaurants, single people can do whatever the hell they want. For example, they can choose to binge on crappy junk food and crappy films and consequently have a great night in or they can choose to go to a traffic light party and find an extra desperate Valentines one night stand. Both sound tempting.

Being single (and not just for Valentine’s day) means you can be completely self-indulgent, you can go travelling, find a new hobby, move to a new city, sit in your underwear and watch Charmed re-runs. All important life experiences like those. You can fall in love with a book, a band, and most importantly, fall in love with yourself. To quote Oscar Wilde, ‘to love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance’.

While you’re not off being a pretentious so and so ‘finding yourself’, being single can make room for all sorts of antics. One night stands, no strings attached relationships and a bit of harmless ego boosting dating. For all of you who think the mere thought of dating is scary, just give it a try, unless you meet a psycho, in my experience, dates always end up being a good chat and a bit of a flirt down the pub.

I won’t pretend that Valentine’s day isn’t nice when you are in a relationship but I will always hammer on how great being single is, in order to have fun, try new things and ultimately learn how to be alone.

I will love you and leave you with another Wilde quote ‘it’s very healthy to spend time alone. You need to know how to be alone and not be defined by another person.’
